Zachary Sims

Research at LLNL: Zachary is studying an emergent class of materials called high entropy alloys and their production with additive manufacturing. He is interested in the development of multi-phase and metastable high entropy alloys for use as next generation materials in applications such as energy technologies. His expertise in ground up alloy development will help him to narrow the nearly limitless possibility for alloy combinations available in high entropy alloy studies to a manageable number by combining a scope of material synthesis and characterization techniques with diverse material modeling approaches.

Bio: Zachary Sims is a Lawrence Fellow in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate. He earned his B.S. in Physics in 2014 from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. After which time he began work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory before returning to the University of Tennessee Knoxville and the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Graduate Education where he received his Ph.D. in 2020. During his time in graduate school Zachary coauthored and advocated for the formation of the Tennessee Energy Policy Council, an advisory board for the Tennessee Governor on which he later served.
